Evensong & In-Home Concerts

Information for Current and Potential Hosts

Listen, we love bingeing the next hot Netflix special as much as the next guy, but what if there was another way to spend an evening at home … something with depth, heart, and beauty?

We Bring the Sing

In 2023, Sound of Ages launched an exciting practice of taking concerts into homes along the Wasatch Front. Our most popular offering, called Evensong, is a program that mixes music (sung by our 4-6 voice Consort) and various forms of spoken-word narration.

Traditionally, Evensong is a service of evening prayers, consisting mostly of music, that is common in the Anglican/Episcopal traditions (similar to “vespers” in the Catholic tradition). Sound of Ages Evensong, however, is not a religious or denominational “service,” but rather an experience designed for musical meditation and personal renewal. Although it’s fine to call it a “concert,” we ask the listeners to withhold applause and to enjoy a moment of reflection rather than to think of it as being entertained.

Sound of Ages also offers an array of entertainment-oriented, in-home concerts including concert comedies, Renaissance Masterworks, and more.

How It Works

Think of Evensong or In-Home Concerts as a “just-add-water” recipe:

  • Sound of Ages bring the music—plus enhancements like LED candles, printed programs, sound reinforcement PA speakers (with reverb for a simulated cathedral sound), etc.—and can perform wherever there is room. An ideal room has a taller ceiling for a livelier sound, but this could be nearly any family or living room.

  • You bring the audience, which is to say that you invite your neighbors, friends, and/or family to join you in your home for the performance, which usually lasts about an hour.

In-home performances aren’t free because Sound of Ages is a professional vocal ensemble that pays its singers. However the money is simple:

  • Sound of Ages will quote a price that varies based on the number of singers and logistical issues like whether special rehearsals are required, etc. A typical fee will range from $400 to $800. Note that Sound of Ages is a registered 501c3, and donations are tax deductible.

  • Some hosts decide to pay the entire fee so that that they can offer an Evensong/concert freely to their neighbors, friends, and family as a gift.

  • By contrast, many hosts collect donations (i.e., ticket fees) from those who attend. If the donations cover the Sound of Ages fee, great! If the donations don’t, then the hosts simply make up the difference. For example, if donations from attendees totaled $350 and the fee was $450, the hosts would pay $100.

Our purpose in all that we do, as we outline in our core beliefs, is to create experiences of transcendent human connection through the infinite power of the human voice. It may be true that Netflix and a pint of Ben & Jerry’s is convenient, but what would it be like to create community and elevate the hearts and minds of all in attendance by hosting an in-home Evensong or concert?
